Golden Great Britain! 26 July 2010

Mairi Buchan scored 13 points and Mary Durojaye added 12 points as Great Britain clinched their first Division B title by beating Slovakia 47-46 at the U20 European Championship for Women.

Great Britain, who have only played Division B at the women's and men's U20 level since 2006, allowed just 14 points in the first half and held on to grab the crown. Both Great Britain and Slovakia, who were led by Klaudia Lukacovicova's 16 points and 14 points from Veronika Cernakova, will play next summer in Division A.

Slovakia surprised Czech Republic to advance to the final of the U20 European Championship for Women Division B while also booking promotion to Division A next summer along with Great Britain, who beat Portugal.

Veronika Cernakova had 19 points while Maria Felixova (18 points and 13 rebounds) and Klaudia Lukacovicova (10 and 12) both registered double-doubles in leading Slovakia to a 53-50 victory over the Czech Republic, keeping the women's basketball powerhouse in Division B next summer despite 16 points and 14 rebounds from Alena Hanusova.

Alena Hanusova had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Czech Republic to a convincing 71-37 victory over Greece in the quarter-finals of the U20 European Championship for Women Division B to set up a semi-final showdown with neighbors Slovakia - 49-46 winners over Hungary.

The other semi-final - with the winner gaining promotion next summer to Division A - will see Great Britain taking on Portugal.  Great Britain beat Israel 72-65 and Portugal eased past Belgium 59-40.

The Czech Republic remained unbeaten at the U20 European Championship Women on Wednesday after an 86-37 drubbing of Belgium.

The Czechs got 20 points and six rebounds from Alena Hanusova in the victory which sets up a Quarter-Final match-up with Greece on Friday.

Dana Kuslitova's 22 points powered the Czech Republic to a 72-58 victory over previously undefeated Great Britain at the U20 European Championship for Women Division B.

The Czechs allowed just eight points in the second quarter in improving to 3-0 in Group B with Alena Hanusova scoring 19 points and Katerina Bartonova chipping in 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Great Britain Under-20 women's coach Damian Jennings was a proud man after watching his team secure their place in the quarter-finals of the European Championship Division B by eeking out a 70-69 victory over tournament hosts Macedonia.

Tamzin Barroilhet scored four points in the final minute, including a pair of critical free-throws, to put GB over the top, and it means they can now face the Czech Republic in the battle for top spot in the group knowing their place is already secure.

Great Britain remained undefeated Sunday at the U20 European Championship Women Division B, but only by the skin of their teeth after holding of hosts F.Y.R. of Macedonia 70-69.

Tamzin Barroihet took care of business from the line, hitting her final four free throws to seal the deal.

Portugal, Great Britain and the Czech Republic all booked their second straight victories at the U20 European Championship for Women Division B.

Marcy Goncalves and Francisca Braga each scored 10 points as Portugal beat Israel 60-46 in Group A, holding Israel to just five points in the fourth quarter.

Israel and Great Britain started the U20 European Championship for Women Division B with convincing victories in opening day action in FYR of Macedonia.

Israel opened Group A play with a strong 62-44 victory over Greece. Naama Shafir had 19 points, six assists and five steals while Shira Shecht came off the bench for 19 points in 16 minutes.

If Hungary are going to be among the elite of women's basketball in the coming years and continue to play at EuroBaskets, it will depend on the players in the youth teams of today.

With that in mind, this is going to be a very busy and interesting summer for Hungary's U20 side.
