Late Latvia Run Too Much For Italy 17 July 2008
Diana Ozolina, Sabine Niedola and Baiba Eglite combined for 60 points as Latvia knocked off hosts Italy 77-68 at the U20 European Championship for Women.

Niedola led the way with 20 points and 17 rebounds for Latvia, who finished third in the Qualifying Round Group E with a 2-3 record. Ozolina had 22 points and Eglite tallied 18 for the Baltic nation.

Italy went from having a chance of reaching the semi-finals to taking fifth place in the group with a 2-3 record despite 25 points from Chiara Consolini. Arianna Zampieri added 12 points and Sabrina Cinili chipped in 11 in the losing effort.

The game was even for the first half of the first period with Italy leading 12-11. But the Latvians led 19-12 after one period as they started hitting shots from long range. Aivars Vinbergs's team drained five triples in the first half and used a 13-2 surge to go into half-time ahead 39-20.

Trailing 43-26, Italy were spurred on by the home fans and Consolini scored all 10 points in a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to single digits. Another Consolini three-pointer made it an eight-point game before Latvia led 54-45 after three periods.

The deficit was just five points - 54-49 - early in the fourth before Latvia blew the game open with a 14-0 run for a 68-49 advantage with four minutes left. And that was too much for the hosts.
